BOTOX® Cosmetic
The most widely used and most studied wrinkle relaxer in the world, approved by Health Canada and in clinical use for over two decades. Results typically begin to show in three to seven days and reach full effect at around two weeks.
Dysport®
Very similar to BOTOX® in how it works, with two practical differences. It tends to show results slightly faster, often within two to five days, and it spreads a little more readily through the tissue, which can make it a good fit for larger areas such as the forehead. Dysport is dosed differently, so the unit count is not comparable to Botox unit for unit.
Xeomin®
A purified formulation that contains no accompanying complexing proteins. For patients who have found other wrinkle relaxers becoming less effective over time, Xeomin is often the option we discuss first.
Botox Or Dysport: Which One Is Right For You?
Patients ask us this constantly, and the honest answer is that for most people either would work well. They are both botulinum toxin type A, they both relax the muscle that creates the line, and in trained hands the results look the same.
The differences are small and practical. BOTOX® usually shows first results in three to seven days, while Dysport® tends to move a little faster at two to five days. Both reach full effect at around the two week mark, and both typically last three to four months.
Dysport spreads slightly more readily through the tissue, which can make it a good choice for a broad area like the forehead. BOTOX® stays a little more contained, which is often preferable in smaller or more precise areas. The two are also dosed differently, so a unit of one is not the same as a unit of the other and the numbers cannot be compared directly.
In practice the question that matters is how quickly you need to see results and which areas you are treating. That is a five minute conversation at your consultation, and there is no cost to having it.

What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your consultation comes first. We look at your face at rest and in movement, talk through what is bothering you, and agree on a plan and a price. This is free and there is no obligation to book.
The treatment itself is a series of very fine injections into the target muscles. Most patients describe it as a quick pinch. No freezing is needed for most areas and the whole thing usually takes 10 to 20 minutes.
Then you go straight back to your day. There is no recovery period. You may have small raised bumps at the injection sites that settle within 20 minutes, and occasionally a little bruising.
You will start to notice softening in the first few days and see the full result at around two weeks. We are happy to see you at the two week mark to check the result and adjust if anything needs it.
Aftercare
For the first four hours, stay upright and avoid lying flat or pressing your face into a pillow.
For the first 24 hours, skip strenuous exercise, saunas, hot tubs and sunbeds, and avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area. Facials and any treatment involving pressure on the area should wait a few days.
You can wear makeup, work, drive and go about your normal day immediately. Gentle facial expressions in the first hour are fine and not something you need to think about.

You will typically notice softening within three to seven days with BOTOX® Cosmetic, and slightly sooner with Dysport®. The full result settles at about two weeks. If you are treating ahead of an event, book three weeks out.

How many units will I need?
It depends entirely on the area and on your muscle strength. Frown lines commonly take around 20 units, forehead lines around 10 to 20, and crow’s feet around 12 to 24 across both sides. Masseter treatment for jaw slimming needs considerably more. We will give you an exact number at your consultation before anything is injected.
What should I avoid after treatment?
Stay upright for four hours, and for the first 24 hours avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, hot tubs and rubbing the treated area. Everything else, including makeup and normal daily activity, is fine straight away.
Does it hurt?
Most patients describe it as a quick pinch. The needles are very fine and each injection takes a second. If you are anxious about it, tell us and we will talk you through every step.
Can I have wrinkle treatment while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. There is not enough safety data in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so we do not treat patients who are pregnant, trying to conceive or nursing. Please speak to your physician about your own circumstances.
Is there anyone who should not have this treatment?
Wrinkle relaxers are not suitable for people with certain neuromuscular conditions, active infection at the injection site, or a known allergy to any component of the product. We go through your full medical history at the consultation, which is part of why the consultation matters.
