What Is Actually in It
Restylane and Stylage are both made from hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule your skin already produces to hold water and stay plump. As we age we make less of it. The filler is a stabilised gel form of that same substance, made in different thicknesses so a soft gel can be used in the lips and a firmer one can lift the cheeks or define the jaw.
What Happens After the Injection
The gel is placed beneath the skin exactly where volume has been lost. It supports the tissue from underneath and draws in water, which smooths folds and restores shape. Most of the change is visible straight away, and it settles into its final look over the following two weeks as any swelling goes down. Over time your body breaks the gel down gradually and naturally.
How Long Results Last
It depends on the area and the product. Lips move constantly and tend to last around six months to a year. Cheeks, chin and jawline usually last a year or longer. Because hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, it is also not an irreversible decision.
Restylane or Stylage: Which Filler Is Right for You?
Both are high quality hyaluronic acid fillers from established manufacturers. Restylane is made by Galderma and Stylage is made by Vivacy. Each brand comes as a family of products with different gel thicknesses, and the choice between them has more to do with the area being treated and the look you want than with one brand being better than the other.
The comparison worth making is filler against wrinkle treatment. Botox and Dysport relax the muscles that cause expression lines, like frown lines and crow’s feet. Filler replaces volume that has been lost. Many patients benefit from both, and at your consultation we will tell you honestly which one your concern actually needs.
What Dermal Fillers Can and Cannot Treat
Lips
Filler can add volume, define the border, correct unevenness and smooth fine lines around the mouth. We work in small amounts and build gradually, because natural looking lips are about proportion, not size.
Cheeks and Midface
Restoring volume high on the cheek lifts the face, softens the folds lower down and brings back the contour that thins with age.
Smile Lines, Chin and Jawline
Filler softens the folds running from the nose to the mouth and the lines at the corners of the mouth, and it can add projection to a weak chin or definition to the jawline.
Expression Lines
Lines that form when you frown, squint or raise your eyebrows are caused by muscle movement, not lost volume. A wrinkle relaxer is the right treatment for those, and we will say so rather than filling a line that filler will not fix.
Loose Skin
This is the honest limit. Filler replaces volume, it does not tighten skin. Overfilling a face to make up for laxity is how people end up looking unnatural, and we would rather turn a treatment down than sell you the wrong one.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your consultation comes first. We look at your face as a whole, talk about what bothers you and what you would like to change, ask about your medical history, allergies and any medication you take, and give you a clear plan and a total cost before anything is decided.
On treatment day we cleanse the skin and apply a topical numbing cream. Most of the filler products we use also contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic mixed into the gel, so the treatment gets more comfortable as it goes. Depending on the area, the injections take about fifteen to thirty minutes.
You will see the difference before you leave. You can drive yourself home and go back to work the same day, though read the next section before you plan anything social.
Filler Swelling, Recovery and Aftercare
Some Swelling Is Normal
Swelling after filler is expected, especially in the lips, and for the first few days the area usually looks fuller than the final result will be. That is the tissue reacting to the injection, not the filler settling badly.
What the First Two Weeks Look Like
Swelling peaks in the first day or two and settles over the following week. You may also have some bruising, tenderness and small firm areas that soften as the gel integrates. Lips generally take the longest to settle. By two weeks you are seeing your true result.
Plan Around It
Leave yourself at least two weeks before a wedding, a holiday or anything you will be photographed at. That gives any bruising time to fade and leaves room for a touch up if one is needed.
Aftercare
Avoid touching, pressing or massaging the area unless we have asked you to. Skip strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and blood thinning supplements for a day or two, and keep makeup off the treated area for the rest of the day. Call us straight away if you notice pain that is getting worse, skin that turns pale, blotchy or dusky, or any change in your vision. These are rare, but they need attention immediately.
When You Will See Results
Straight away, with the final result at around two weeks once swelling has settled. If anything looks uneven at that point, let us know and we will take a look.
