How Belkyra Works

What Is Actually in It
Belkyra is deoxycholic acid. It is sold in Canada by AbbVie under Drug Identification Number 02443910 and is authorized by Health Canada for moderate to severe fullness under the chin in adults. Your body already produces deoxycholic acid in the gut, where its job is to break down the fat in your food.
What Happens After the Injection
The injections go into the fat layer under your chin, not into muscle and not into skin. The deoxycholic acid breaks down the membrane of the fat cells it contacts, and those cells are destroyed. Over the following weeks your body clears them through its normal metabolic process. Because the fat cells are gone rather than shrunk, the reduction is considered permanent as long as your weight stays broadly stable.
How Many Treatments You Will Need
Treatments are spaced a minimum of one month apart. Most people see a visible change after two, and Health Canada authorizes up to six. We reassess at every visit and stop when you are happy, which for the majority of our patients is well before six.
Belkyra or Kybella: What Is the Difference?
Nothing, apart from the name on the box. Belkyra and Kybella are the same drug, deoxycholic acid, from the same manufacturer. Kybella is the brand name used in the United States. Belkyra is the name it is sold under in Canada, Europe and Australia. If you have read an American article about Kybella, everything in it applies to what we use here.
The comparison worth making is against the alternatives. Coolsculpting freezes fat rather than dissolving it, and it needs a suction applicator that not every chin fits. Chin liposuction removes more fat in a single session, but it is surgery, with anaesthetic, a compression garment and real recovery. Belkyra sits between the two. No surgery and no anaesthetic beyond a numbing cream, but several short visits rather than one long one.
What Belkyra Can and Cannot Treat
Submental Fullness
This is what Belkyra is for. The pad of fat that sits between the chin and the neck and blunts the angle of the jawline. If you can pinch it, Belkyra can usually reduce it.
Jowls and the Lower Face
Belkyra is authorized only for the area under the chin. Some injectors use it off label for small fat pockets elsewhere. We are happy to talk that through with you honestly, but it is not what the drug was approved for, and we will say so when a different treatment is the better fit.
Loose Skin
This is the honest limit. Belkyra removes fat, it does not tighten skin. If the fullness under your chin is laxity rather than volume, taking the fat out from underneath can make loose skin more obvious rather than less. At your consultation we will tell you if that is the case for you. We would rather turn a treatment down than sell you the wrong one.
Weight Loss
Belkyra is not a weight loss treatment. It targets one small pocket of fat under the chin. It will not change the number on the scale and it is not a substitute for anything else.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your consultation comes first. We look at the area under your chin, check whether the fullness is fat or skin laxity, ask about your medical history and any medication you take, and give you a realistic number of treatments and a total cost before anything is decided.
On treatment day we clean the area and mark a grid on the skin under your chin so the injections land evenly. A topical numbing cream goes on first and an ice pack helps too. The injections themselves take about fifteen to twenty minutes. There are usually somewhere between twenty and fifty of them, which sounds like a lot, but they are shallow and the needle is very fine.
You will feel warmth and stinging for a few minutes afterwards. That settles. You can drive yourself home and go back to work the same day if you want to, though read the next section before you plan anything social.
Belkyra Swelling, Recovery and Aftercare
The Swelling Is the Treatment Working
Belkyra swells, and it swells more than most injectables. That is not a complication. It is the inflammatory response that means the fat cells are breaking down. Knowing it is coming is the difference between a fine experience and an alarming one.
What the First Two Weeks Look Like
Swelling peaks in the first two to three days and is at its most noticeable during the first week. Most people look like themselves again somewhere between ten days and two weeks, though it can run a little longer after a first treatment. You may also have bruising, tenderness, numbness under the chin and a firm or lumpy feeling in the area. All of that is expected and all of it settles.
Plan Around It
Book your treatment when you have a quiet stretch ahead of you. Do not schedule it in the week before a wedding, a holiday or anything you will be photographed at. Patients who leave themselves two clear weeks are almost always happy with how it went. Patients who booked three days before an event are the ones who wish someone had warned them.
Aftercare
Use a cold compress for the first day or two. Sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights. Skip strenuous exercise, alcohol and blood thinning supplements for a couple of days. Do not massage or press on the area. Call us if anything worries you, particularly difficulty swallowing or an uneven smile. Both are rare and both are things we want to hear about immediately.
When You Will See Results
Give it four to six weeks after each treatment before you judge it, because the swelling has to fully settle before the change is visible. Results build with every session, and once the fat cells are gone they stay gone.
